What is a Structural Light Panel?

The Pixalux® structural light panel combines the evenly diffused light of light panel or luminaire with the strength and versatility of a laminate wood panel to create a lighting product that can easily be built into objects and used to support weight. This never before seen combination of features enables endless new possibilities for lighting through seamless integration and direct support of objects

How does it work?

Pixalux® structural light panels use similar light transmission technology to other diffused lighting products such as light boxes and screens. This is known as a light guide plate (LGP). The way that Pixalux® structural light panels differ from similar products such as light boxes is through the unique structural capabilities of the panel. Unlike other lighting products, Pixalux® structural light panels are essentially solid acrylic which gives them their unique and patented structural capabilities.

The perfectly smooth surface of Pixalux® light panels allows them to be directly printed on, and the even light distribution makes them perfect for signage or communication. When fitted RGB LEDs, the colour of the panel can be customised to exact specifications, or even change dynamically.

Pixalux® works by positioning an LED strip against the edge of the panel, which spreads the light throughout the panel and evenly illuminates both faces. This makes it remarkably efficient, and keeps wiring to an absolute minimum.

Sizes

Pixalux® structural light panels are available to order in a range of different sizes to suit your needs. Our panels are always specified as Length x Depth. This is because the maximum depth of a panel is determined by how far the light can travel.

 LED Channels

LEDs for Pixalux® structural light panels are housed in an aluminium profile that fits flush with the panel to ensure a high quality finish. There are three core profiles available that enable the product to be used in a huge range of configurations.

Pixalux® structural light panels can be finished from a carefully curated range of edge tapes that ensure consistent product quality.

LEDs & Connectivity

Pixalux® structural light panels can adapt to many different applications thanks to the range of input options available. Panels can be fitted with standard Pixalux® white, adjustable white or full colour LEDs. Coupled with remote controlled drivers and various 12V peripherals, the possibilities are endless.

The Queensland College of Art, Brisbane

The Queensland College of Art is one of Australia's longest-running art and design colleges while also remaining one of the most modern, offering the widest range of visual art programs in the country. It brings together some of the finest artists and academics in the areas of visual arts, design, Indigenous art and screen media, and has produced many of Australia's leading practitioners.  The Queensland College of Art is situated at Southbank in Brisbane’s CBD right on the Brisbane River and is a hub of creativity. The College was looking for a way to brighten & modernise the cafeteria as the central meeting area of the College and decided that it would be great to have on display some of the works by their amazing student artists and other academics and for it to be viewable from the river.  More importantly for the artwork to stand out at night to passers-by.

     
 
     
First World War Galleries, Australian War Memorial, Canberra
The exhibit at the War Memorial is brilliantly lit from underneath by Pixalux® light panels that are installed in the floor. Pixalux® panels are great for lighting sensitive artifacts as they emit negligible amounts of UV light and heat.

Due to the robust nature of the Pixalux® light panel, the supports for the artifacts can run through holes made in the panels themselves, with minimal disruption to light output. Always seek advice before modifying Pixalux® light panels.

Pixalux® light panels are used to illuminate information for a WWI display at the Maritime Museum. Graphics have been applied directly to the panel enabling the display to be interactive.

Since Pixalux® light panels can be used as structural elements, they have been used as a counter top and drawer base for this display at the Maritime Museum. At the Sydney Jewish Museum, Pixalux® light panels have been used to illuminate print graphics.
  Sydney Jewish Museum
Pixalux® light panels are used in the Signs of Life exhibit at the Sydney Jewish Museum to illuminate important letters from the Holocaust period. The low heat and UV output of the panels is important in this exhibit for preserving the letters within.
